Cyber Monday, the Monday after the Thanksgiving holiday, was a term coined in 2005, as a marketing ploy to encourage consumers to shop for their wares online.
In 2013, Cyber Monday online sales grew by 20.6% over 2012, hitting a record $2.29 billion, with an average order of $128.
Best Buy posted its Cyber Monday deals on its site – though there might be a catch. Bestbuy.com went offline twice for roughly an hour on Black Friday, due to an overload of mobile traffic. Online consumers were greeted with the message, “We’re sorry. Best Buy.com is currently unavailable. Come Back Soon.”
A representative for Best Buy said in a statement that the site was shut down due to a “concentrated spike in mobile traffic triggered issues.” Consumers took to Twitter to vent their frustration over the site being offline:
